It is listed that Funkadelic's version of "I'll Bet You" was used on 'Car Thief'. However, it is the version done by the Jackson 5 on their 'ABC' LP that was used. This track can be listened to in its entirety on the following page:

http://www.last.fm/music/The+Jackson+5/ABC

Hey! I just came upon this site when I ran a search for some Beasties lyrics.

I noticed in the song "Car Thief" you say the phrase "In The Belly of the Beast" is in reference to the "book written by prison writer Jack Henry Abbott." But "the belly of the beast" is usually just used to mean "prison" or "jail," which is what Abbott is referring to in the title of his book. The lyric "The Godfather of Soul is in the belly of the beast / For smoking that dust at St. Anthony's Feast" is without a doubt a reference to the infamous arrest and imprisonment of James Brown (the Godfather of Soul) on September 25, 1988. Brown, high on PCP ("dusted") infamously led police on a three-state car chase which finally ended when the cops shot out two of Brown's tires. Brown spent three years in jail for this. The arrest and start of Brown's imprisonment happened when the Beasties were working on PB.

The St. Anthony's Feast line I think is used because it rhymes. St. Anthony's Feast is celebrated the last week-end of August traditionally, which would have been a month before the James Brown bust.

Well, thanks for the site. I hope it keeps going!

I noticed previously there appeared to be a listing for the track 'Southern Comfort' by The Crusaders here. It's now gone. However the opening baseline in this song is indeed a track from the Crusaders' album Southern Comfort - however, it's 'The Well's Gone Dry' that's used on this track.

Does anyone know if this is the baseline sampled on Block Rockin' Beats by The Chemical Bros??

From 'Stop That Train' listing:

Bass drum, horns and chimes from "Save the World" by All The People

The sample actually appears to be from the Southside Movement track 'Save the World' from the album 'Movin'. This track is also featured on vol 25 of Ultimate Breaks and Beats. I don't know if 'All the People' are even an existing group or where this comes from. Anyone?

I'd alwats thunk that Paul's was made up by the b=boys, not ever a real place.
Ludlow and Rivngton is the site of the cover shoot, hoev. And the sign and place is gone now anyway. Check:
The cover folds out to show an (almost) 360° panoramic view as seen from the corner of Ludlow and Rivington streets. As can be seen by the keen eye in the cover and sleeve art, the address that is supposed to be 'Paul's Boutique' (but can clearly be identified as Lee's Sportswear by the top sign) is on [1]99 Rivington St., where Rivington intersects Ludlow in New York City's Lower East Side. The 'Paul's Boutique' sign was hung on the building specifically for the cover photo shoot. Until early 2007, in this building was an eatery named 'Paul's Boutique' in honor of the album. It is now called 'Three Monkeys' and a new bar has opened across the street, called 'Spitzer's Corner.'

"On the bass was boots on the drums was checkers" - the "boots" refers to Bootsy Collins, the star-shaped-glasses wearing bass player

so who is "checkers"? could it be this person?

The lively bunch of 19-year-old club musicians, the Derailleurs, who animate the pages of this engaging novel, derives much of its spirit from its drummer, Checker Secretti, their philosophical and musical guru.

a book about them was published in 1988, a year before Paul's Boutique was released.

Shriver's second novel, about a teenage rock band in Astoria, New York, is at its best funny, clever, and touching. She uses a few interesting narrative techniques and peppers dialogue and exposition with quotations from and references to middle-of-the-road rock. Her own lyrics are terrific: "Turn a profit on all that ennui." But Checker Secretti, meant to embody mainstream rock, also represents the book's shortcomings. Although the reader is encouraged to see him as a fascinating enigma, Secretti no longer seems complex after some of his secrets are revealed. In an epilogue the rockers are older and "will learn about satisfaction," but this would entail betraying the message of rock and roll.

As far as I know I'd like to add some extra samples:

- "Here's something fresh..." is from Rock Master Scott & The Dynamic Three's, "Request Line"
- Drum beat sample after 'Here's something fresh' part: "Funky Drummer" by James Brown
- "Come on let's get down, get right on down..." is from Kool & The Gang's, "A Place In Space"
- "Now let me hear my man (?)..." sample: "Sing a Simple Song" by Please
- Moan sample is probably from, "Put Your Love (In My Tender Care)" by The Fatback Band
